NFSJ hosts ‘Meet the Scientists Episode-2’ with Dr. Hemu Kafle
Kathmandu – The Nepal Forum of Science Journalists (NFSJ) recently hosted a captivating ‘Meet the Scientists Episode-2,’ featuring the esteemed Nepali scientist and researcher, Dr. Hemu Kafle.
Dr. Kafle, also the director of the Kathmandu Institute of Applied Sciences, focused on the important topic of adapting to climate change in agriculture during the event. She highlighted the lack of substantial research in Nepal regarding measures to assist farmers in adapting to the effects of climate change. ‘The significance of establishing an adequate number of meteorological stations across Nepal’s diverse geographical landscape, emphasizing that an increased number of weather measurement stations would be highly beneficial,’ She stated.
Dr. Ramesh Sapkota, Asst. Professor at the Central Department of Environmental Science under Tribhuvan University, emphasized the need for extensive studies and research on the impacts of climate change. He specifically stressed the importance of investigating how climate change affects daily life and agriculture.
Dr. Maan Bahadur Rokaya, another researcher and scientist at science academy of Czech Republic, acknowledged the challenges posed by climate change while also highlighting the positive aspects of farming activities starting in certain mountainous regions. He argued that climate change does not always result in negative consequences and can sometimes bring about different effects. Dr. Rokaya shared an example from Humla, where the rise in temperature has facilitated the cultivation of vegetables and rice that were previously absent.
Chhatra Karki, the Founding President and Program Director of NFSJ, expressed that the Meet the Scientist program was initiated to facilitate interaction between scientists and journalists, bridging the gap between the scientific community and science journalists. The program aims to disseminate scientific information to the public in a comprehensible manner.
Rajan Pokhrel, the President of NFSJ, extended gratitude to Dr. Kafle and all the participants for the success of the event. He assured everyone that NFSJ would continue organizing the Meet the Scientist series on various topics in the future.
